Assembling at Odori subway station. We were off to the Odori subway station office near Sapporo Pole Town shopping mall.
We told a station employee that we were going to get off at Sapporo station. After that we bought our subway tickets and went to the platform.
All the participants gathered, and then we got on the subway.
We arrived at Sapporo station and passed Apia shopping center. Next we moved through an access way, and went to L-Plaza.
At L-Plaza, three physically challenged people gave a talk on their lives. Then, question and answer period started. Finally, we talked about the weight of electric wheelchairs and the charging time of the batteries, as well as transportation facilities. The event finished at 5:00p.m.
Five Rusutsu High school students and their teacher participated in the workshop in Soen on Wednesday, October 18th. They received four used wheelchairs from a nursing home in Rusutsu and they brought those wheelchairs to be repaired.
Students who belong to social welfare department have chances to handle wheelchairs, but it was the first time for the students to repair them. It was great to repair those wheelchairs with their own hands.
- They polished up wheelchairs.
- They changed tires.
- They put grease into bearings.
Time flew by. We had a great time. The students’ skillful handling of tools impressed the staff. Thanks to their great work, the wheelchairs were sparkling. Students are looking forward to the wheelchairs being delivered abroad.
- These wheelchairs were delivered to Indonesia in February, 2012.
Thank you very much to Rusutsu high school students and their teacher for coming.
International Understanding lecture
A Go Fly Wheelchair member was invited to a class as a guest lecturer at Sapporo City University. The member talked about social welfare, including wheelchairs in developing countries. What student volunteers learned.
Feedback from the students
- Student A: I heard people of varying ages work at this NPO, thinking about what each person can do. I realized all the people play important roles in each part.
- Student B: When I was a high school student, I learned about land mines, I thought they are so scary and countries who have land mines have trouble. That is why sending wheelchairs to victims is very meaningful.
- Student C: I learned through this lecture it is important to find what I want to do.
- Student D: NPO Go Fly Wheelchairs send used wheelchairs to foreign people who need them. As a result, not only can people improve their lives but also human relationships can grow. That is great.
